If youâre like us, youâve probably read more than a few stories about horrible nightmare sinkholes that swallow up trucks and kill people. Join us, then, in praise of the Little Sinkhole of West Tenth Street.
The wee sinkhole was born around 9 a.m. Friday on the block between Bleecker and West Fourth Streets, after sewage leaking from a broken pipe washed away the fill beneath the pavement, which then collapsed, city officials said. It was about six feet long and six feet deep â" big enough for a person to fall into. Thankfully, no one did, just some menus and other street flotsam.
The sinkhole was also big enough to force the M8 bus to detour onto other streets. But by 4:18 p.m., the hole had been backfilled by the cityâs Department of Environmental Protection, the blocked-off part of the street had reopened and normal bus service had resumed.
Goodbye, little sinkhole!
