A Decade Later, an Appreciation for the Daffodils

Dear Diary:

When the daffodils bloom in my neighborhood, I think of spring 2002, when suddenly daffodils appeared everywhere; it seemed the smallest bare patch of earth had a few blossoms to share.

A gift of a million bulbs had been sent by a Dutch millionaire, the city of Rotterdam and other donors; they were planted by volunteers.

For all of which, great thanks: we needed that.
