The Stone Temple Pilots have parted ways with their longtime lead singer Scott Weiland. The group put out a single-sentence news release on Wednesday: âStone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland.â
The San Diego hard-rock and grunge band, which came to prominence in the early 1990s, reformed in 2008 after a five-year break and toured heavily last year.
Mr. Weiland, one of the founding members, plans to do a solo tour beginning next month, mining material from the groupâs first two albums. He told Rolling Stone in an interview earlier this week that the band had been going through a rocky period.
âMy personal feeling is that we need some new blood in the band,â he said. âWeâve been playing the same greatest hits set since we got back together. Iâd like to make a new record. It will breathe new life into the group.â
He added his views had created some tension in the group: âThere were some hurt egos. But thatâs the way it is.â
