Would-be cloud giants hone their enterprise strategies

Amazon Web Services, which perfected its pitch to developers long ago, is adding more enterprise-grade features and services to attract — or at least not repel — IT professionals. The latest example was last week’s news that AWS Marketplace is now offering a some enterprise applications  via annual subscriptions.

Before now, buyers had to pay by the hour or the month.  Granted, the 90 applications now offered this week do not include some biggies — no Oracle or Microsoft or SAP stuff is included. But if you’re in the buying mood for MicroStrategy’s analytics enterprise or Brocade’s  Vyatta vRouter or Citrix Netscaler VX, you can source it by the year.

And Apple, which has seen Android phones steadily eroding iPhone market share, apparently decided its time to ditch its historical contempt for IBM — many stories pulled up the old photo of Steve Jobs flipping the bird tin front of an IBM building — and to join forces with it. In a joint deal, the companies said IBM will act as Apple Care support in enterprise accounts, and will work with Apple to develop more than 100 enterprise vertical apps for iPhones and iPads.
