The real reason for the possible change is that working with tires that are similar to those on road cars will make it easier for Pirelli to take technology it develops for F1 and deliver it to customers. There's a long tradition of F1 technologies trickling down to us regular folk, and Pirelli wants to add to it. "We believe that it benefits everybody to have as close a link between road tires and competition tires as possible," the company says.
