What on television was outstanding over the past twelve months? What shows, what movies? Which actors, which writers, which directors? We’ll begin to find out the television industry’s own answers to those questions on Thursday morning, when the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announces the nominations for the primetime Emmys, the most prestigious awards in TV.

The nominees for categories like outstanding drama will be named at 8:40 a.m. Eastern time during a four-minute ceremony in Los Angeles. It will be live-streamed at Emmys.com and televised by the morning shows on the major networks, even though it’s increasingly niche cable channels, not broadcast networks, that take home the biggest prizes. This year both the broadcasters and the cable guys are bracing for new competition from Netflix, the online streaming service that is likely to be nominated for two original shows, “House of Cards” and “Arrested Development.” Fans of last year’s drama winner “Homeland,” its rivals “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” and the three-time comedy winner “Modern Family,” to name a few, will be watching to see how their shows fare. Then the academy’s voting begins; the Emmy winners will be annouced on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Immediately after Thursday’s announcement, ArtsBeat will have news of the nominations, reactions from the nominees and analysis from Mike Hale, a television critic for The New York Times.
