New York Today: Stampede to Summer

As noon approaches, thousands of doors will fly open across the city.

A million students will parade noisily into the sun for the last time this public school year.

And for them, summer will finally begin.

Here’s what else you need to know to start your Wednesday.

WEATHER â€" Yet another scorcher, but bring an umbrella â€" and maybe even a hard hat: there’s a decent chance of hail and windy thunderstorms this afternoon. Temperatures are expected to hit 90 for the third straight day. City coolng centers are open again. No heat relief in sight till Friday.

TRANSIT & TRAFFIC

- Major delays inbound on the G.W.B., and on the inbound B.Q.E. through Cadman Plaza, according to 1010 WINS. Alternate-side parking is in effect.

- Delays on southbound F and G trains. Click for latest status.

COMING UP TODAY

- With Supreme Court rulings expected on same-sex marriage, there will be a rally or protest (depending on the outcome) outside the Stonewall Inn in the Village at 5:30 p.m. Edith Windsor, the 83-year-old plaintiff in one of the Supreme Court cases, will speak in Manhattan at noon. Coincidentally, Mayor Bloomberg is hosting a 6 p.m. reception at Gracie Mansion in honor of LGBT Pride Month.

- Bear, the hero police dog who got his snout kicked in and his teeth busted making an arrest in the subway last week, will be released from the Animal Medical Center on the East Side at noon. Police dogs will line up in an honor guard outside.

- Democratic candidates for mayor and public advocate will speak at a 7 p.m. forum at Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village. Sal Albanese will be on the Brian Lehrer show at 10:25 a.m.

- The Dominican Film Festival of New York opens at 7:30 at Columbia University Medical Center on 168th Street with the action movie “El Rey de Najayo.”

- Broadway theaters will dim their lights at 8 p.m. in memory of James Gandolfini.
