Katherine Boo brought the Annawadi slum to vivid life in âBehind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity,â one of the most acclaimed books of 2012. The National Theater in London hopes to do the same in a stage version of the book next year.
The playwright David Hare will adapt Ms. Booâs book, and Rufus Norris, one of the theaterâs associate directors, will direct the production. Itâs scheduled to appear in the Olivier auditorium as part of the National Theaterâs fall 2014 season.
Ms. Boo spent more than three years in the slum to write the book. Reviewing the book for The Times, Janet Maslin wrote, âNovelists dream of defining characters this swiftly and beautifully.â
