Imagine a book prize for which the finalists include titles like âHow Tea Cosies Changed the World,â âWas Hitler Illâ and âGodâs Doodle: The Life and Times of the Penis.â
Those runners-up couldnât compete with what The Associated Press described as a âsupernaturally tinged barnyard manualâ called âGoblinproofing Oneâs Chicken Coop,â which won Britainâs quirkiest literary award, the Diagram Prize, for the yearâs oddest book title.
âGoblinproofing Oneâs Chicken Coopâ has as its subtitle, âAnd Other Practical Advice in Our Campaign Against The Fairy Kingdom.ââ Its Massachusetts-based publisher, Conari Press, described it as âthe essential primer for banishing the dark fair creatures that are lurking in the dark corners and crevices of your life.â
The author, Reginald Bakeley, was awarded the prize on Friday by the trade magazine The Bookseller. His editor, Clint Marsh, said he believes the prize âis a clear sign that people have had enough of goblins in their chicken coops.ââ He added, âOur Campaign against the fairy kingdom continues.ââ
