The MacDowell Colony, the prestigious artistsâ retreat in New Hampshire, has announced that the composer Stephen Sondheim will be awarded the 54th annual Edward MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement in the arts. Mr. Sondheim will be the first artist from musical theater to receive the award.
âThis is not only a wonderful honor, but a sort of homecoming to me, as I spent much of my piano-playing childhood beginning with âTo a Wild Roseâ and working my way up to the Second Piano Sonata,â Mr. Sondheim said in a statement, referring to the works of Edward MacDowell.
The medal is to be presented at a public ceremony on Aug. 11 in Peterborough, N.H.
