Heavy Smoke Leads to Evacuation of Port Authority Bus Terminal

Fire officials evacuated the Port Authority Bus Terminal on Saturday evening after heavy smoke was reported to be billowing through the building.

Fire trucks and personnel swarmed the terminal entrance on Eighth Avenue around 8 p.m., as a large crowd of travelers gathered outside.

A malfunctioning HVAC system was likely to blame for the smoke, a fire spokesman said. There was no evidence of any fire, the spokesman said.

By 9:15, the fire trucks had departed and travelers were once again allowed into the building.
