Jammu and Kashmir: Amid a shortage of cooking gas cylinders in the Kashmir Valley, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says he has given up two of his gas connections, according to IBNLive, which reported Friday that Mr. Abdullah had three. The shortage has led to protests in recent months, and residents say that gas dealers and agents are colluding to charge customers unfair fees. The federal government, in September, had imposed a restriction of one gas connection per household.

Assam:  The police said a 10-year-old boy was killed and five people were wounded this week in a grenade attack by suspected militants in a crowded market in the town of Udalguri, 71 kilometers, or 44 miles, north of the state capital of Guwahati, according to an AFP report carried by The Hindustan Times.

Uttar Pradesh: The principal of a government school in the Barabanki district has been sentenced to life in prison for stealing scholarship funds meant for scheduled-caste  students, India Today reported. The principal and a school manager, who received a 10-year sentence, had maintained “a register of ghost students” in the name of a school that had ceased to exist in 1977, according to the report.

Rajasthan: A village council in Dausa on Wednesday said that girls should not carry mobile phones or wear scarves, Daily Bhaskar reported. The diktat, which the council said was for girls' safety, followed the disappearance of a girl from the village last week.
