Automaker General Motors began initial production of its âfirst Chinese-designed car for the Indian marketâ this week, Reuters reported in Talegaon, about 60 miles from Mumbai.
The Sail, which is already sold elsewhere âas a sedan and a hatchback,â will go on sale next month in India, the report said. The car was the first model designed by SAIC Motor, G.M.'s Chinese partner.
âUnlike the situation in China,â the report said, âwhere G.M. and Volkswagen top the passenger vehicle market with a combined 30 percent share,â in India, foreign automakers have struggled in theâhighly competitive and price-sensitiveâ car market.
